VPN Payment Flow

Role: Product Design, UX, UI

“Aligned with our core values, AdBlock VPN will give you online privacy and anonymity by creating a private network from a public internet connection.”

Project Description
Integrate the ability for AdBlock users to learn about and subscribe to our VPN software via the website. We wanted to educate our users not only on what a virtual private network is, but why it would come at an additional cost. This was AdBlock’s first paid product and we wanted the purchasing experience to be straightforward and sincere, focused on facts. A strong visual identity and illustrative style should further enforce our ethos of being a trusted and dependable technology company that provides intuitive tools to empower users.

UX Challenges

How can our users discover AdBlock’s new VPN software? How does someone that is not an AdBlock user purchase the VPN? How does someone that just purchased the VPN install it on their device? How do we handle our AdBlock Premium users that already pay for additional functionality on top of the AdBlock core product…would they expect a discount? We pride ourselves on our transparency and the fact that millions of people trust us to help them make the internet a better place. By keeping the experience of our users front and center we were able to develop pathways that simultaneously prioritized our business objectives without sacrificing user goals. In the end, we were able to tailor the experience in a way that made sense.

It is worth mentioning here that adding a VPN software to our product suite dovetailed with the project of account management. Accounts had never been part of the AdBlock experience. We create tools to solve online problems but we do it without gathering any user data - ever. It was clear that in order to be successful, users needed a secure domain to manage their account, one that would align with the privacy stance that AdBlock had been built on.

User Flow

UX Solutions

Presently, the AdBlock VPN page can be accessed via our website or extension. You are presented with tailored payment options depending on your user status. We carefully laid out the benefits of using a VPN and paired it with imagery that supported our feature set. The VPN landscape is quite dense so we were looking to differentiate ourselves by simplifying what has the potential to be a complicated and often intimidating process.
